The honey-glazed Spring Oven is an award-winning terracotta pot designed in Britain by Patrick Kendal and handmade by craftsmen in Portugal for bakers. The Spring Oven is designed for baking a 500g round boule with steam helping the dough rise and to give a good crust. The Spring Oven has a special water channel in its base to produce lots of steam inside the pot just when it is needed during the early stages of the dough baking. The upper side of the base of this version is coated in honey glaze making an attractive finish which is easy to clean.
Beautifully designed, originally as a university design project centred around healthy eating, the prototype won a Design Council award in 2014. Since then, the company has run a successful Kickstarter fundraising project to take the product to market.Â
Handmade in Portugal using a traditional ceramic slip-casting process (see the video), each Spring Oven is made to a very high quality using high-fired, locally sourced terracotta. The procedure of slip-casting cannot be rushed and requires attention and skill to produce the exceptional finish on each Spring Oven.
